One of the major tourist destinations Gaya, located on the banks of the Falgu River, is surrounded by rocky hills such as Ram-Sheila, Mangla-Gauri and Brahmayoni on three sides. Gaya, is considered as one of the most sacred Buddhist pilgrimage center of the world. It is a land rich in cultural, religious and spiritual heritage. The town's major activities are around the tourists that visit Gaya as a pilgrimage sight. The local population does not have many other major interests or activities going on regularly. Traditional Lifestyle of Gaya

The people of the state of Bihar are considered to be quite orthodox in their thinking and approach to life. They have strong rooted values and believe in the rich Indian traditions. They are also deep believers in God, the almighty and are God fearing.The favorite pass-time or source of entertainment for them is visiting movie halls to watch both Bollywood and Bhojpuri films. Bhojpuri films are extremely popular amongst the locals and is a part of their weekly entertainment routine. Languages spoken in Bihar include English, Hindi, Bengali, Bhojpuri, Magahi and Maithili.


Traditionally, the Bihari men wear the dhoti-kurta and the women sarees. Sarees are worn in the seedha aanchal style. Jewelery such as rings for men and bangles for women are popular with the traditional garments. Bihari cuisine is mainly vegetarian due to the influence of Buddhist and Hindu values of non-violence. Meat and fish are however eaten, especially due to the number of rivers in Bihar such as the Sone, Gandak and the Ganges

With the influence of western culture and lifestyles, the way of dressing has also undergone a change. Western shirts and trousers are becoming popular among the both rural and urban male population. The women in urban pockets of Gaya are choosing to wear the salwar-kameez. In Gaya you can find many apparel shops dealing with multiple dressing items. While women can find salwar-kameez to Pencil jeans, mens at the same time can have shorts, cargoes, jackets and other fashionable wear. Majority population of Gaya mainly enjoy movies as a source of entertainment. Sometimes, they do visit such places and prefer the local dancing clubs and that are a sort of entertainment avenues.

Fast food is quite popular in Gaya owing to the large number of tourists that throng Gaya every year for pilgrimage. Cafe and patisseries serve baked dishes and various international dishes as well. There are many other restaurants in an around Gaya serving delicious cuisines. Though there are only few branded fast food outlets in Gaya yet there are sizable number of local restaurants serving popular foods and beverages.

Keeping fit and staying healthy is the mantra now amongst youth and even people who are older and middle aged. Various modes of exercising like walking, jogging, running, swimming etc. are adopted. Going to gyms regularly and working under the supervision of a trained instructor has also become popular.
